Phone Repair and Chip-Off Forensics Training

Training Duration: 5 days

Teel Technologies, the provider of mobile device forensic tools and training, and Wild PCS, the leader in phone repair training have partnered to deliver a comprehensive and cost-effective education in mobile device repair and chip-off forensic analysis. This is an introductory class for advanced digital forensics examiners looking to enhance their skills and analysis options.

The five-day class provides students with three days of mobile device repair and disassembly lessons, and two days of chip reading and data analysis of TSOP and BGA NAND chips. In the first part, lessons on how to repair a damaged or wet phone is taught, along with an understanding of the mobile devices¹ structure, memory location and how to properly and safely extract chips from mobile devices, flash memory devices, thumb drives and devices using NAND chips for memory. The team at Wild PCS have developed specialized course material for the requirements of the forensic examiner, combining elements of their advanced classes, and specialized iPhone instructional course.

Following the three days of device repair and chip removal instructions, two days of lessons on how to read and interpret data from both TSOP and BGA NAND. At this time, the course material and practical lessons are focused on TSOP NAND memory analysis and chip reading, while providing options and demonstrations for the removal, reading and analysis of BGA chips. Today, most phones are using the BGA style NAND chips, although some devices, such as the iPhone 2G/3 use the TSOP style memory. The class provides students with "hands-on" lessons in TSOP and BGA NAND memory. At Teel Technologies, we are currently researching the best and most cost-effective solutions for BGA chips and options that have been found to date will be demonstrated in class. Students will be able to do "hands-on" reads from TSOP/BGA chips from the most popular phones like iPhone, Blackberry, Android and the main stream type flip, slider and brick mobile devices.
